How to Pick an Effective Domain Name

Choosing a domain name for your business is as important as building an excellent website. Today, there are more than 50 million registered domain names worldwide and everyday thousands more are being added.

Here are some tips on how to pick a domain name that invites more web traffic:

Choose the name that suits your business.

If you’re going to use your domain name for your main business website, it’s best to pick a domain name that is closest to your brand or company name especially if you’ve been in the industry for some time. People have already recognized the name of your company. Using a domain name that is related to your company name will help people recognize that you’re the same company that they have trusted for years.

If you’re just starting your business, it will be better to use the same name for your company and your domain. This will greatly help you with your marketing strategies both online and offline since you’ll only be promoting one name or brand. Besides, it will be easier to familiarize people if you’re promoting the same name both in and out of the internet.

Choose a domain name that best describes your business. An effective domain name states what kind of business you do, what particular services you offer, or what exact solution can you give. This way, your target market can find you easier and they will be able to tell you apart from the other businesses. You may list down words that are relevant to your business and from your here, you can try out different combination or ideas for a name.

Include keywords in your domain name. If you’re going to use your domain name for specific web pages of your site, don’t forget to include target keywords. This way, search engines can easily pick up your site and include them in the search results of websites that contain those keywords. Think of possible keywords that people may use when doing their search and use this as your domain name.

Make your domain name short and effective. Domain names can be up to 67 characters in length and may contain numbers, letters and hyphens. However, it’s best to keep it short. As we’ve said earlier, a domain that is easy to remember is short and catchy especially if you’re going to use it as your primary URL. Most people have trouble remembering very long names and this is why you want to have a short domain.

Choose a domain name that ends in .COM.
Websites that end in .COM have better recognition than the less popular ones such as .net, .biz, .org, and others. If you can find an available domain name that ends in .com, it will be better than using other extensions.

Register variations of your domain. You may purchase variations of the domain name you already have and point them all to your website. However, you don’t have to spend so much on buying too many variations. Two or three variations should be enough if you have the resources.
